With freeform shape and texture, this primitive bench from Shandong province embodies the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy that beauty and integrity can be found within the imperfections of a timeworn object.
The low seat is comprised of a solid plank of reclaimed wood, selected for its gently curved shape and prominent grain pattern. The hewn log top is elevated by simple chiseled legs, each textured with blade marks and affixed with traditional joinery. Patched repairs to losses in the wood add great character and enhance the bench's rustic feel.
