This striking 19th century Caucasian Kazak kilim is a superb example of traditional tribal flatweaving from the southern Caucasus. Handwoven in a bold striped geometric pattern, the design features rows of hooked diamond motifs—ancient protective symbols found in early nomadic weavings. The palette of ivory, rust, green, indigo blue, and deep navy is beautifully balanced and rendered in organic vegetable dyes that have matured into rich, nuanced tones over more than a century.
Kazak kilims of this age and condition are exceptionally rare, especially given their tapestry-style flatweave construction. The durability of the wool, the tightness of the weave, and the preservation of the original colors speak to the exceptional quality of this piece. The natural abrash (subtle tonal variation) adds depth and authenticity, giving the textile dynamic character and visual warmth.
