This exceptional 19th century Caucasian Shirvan kilim is an outstanding example of early tribal textile art from the Caucasus region. Woven in a striking palette of turquoise, purple, blue, and ivory, the composition flows in rhythmic horizontal bands of bold geometric motifs. Unlike commercial or later workshop kilims, this piece was woven entirely by hand on a village loom, giving it the soulful irregularities and artistic freedom prized by collectors.
As with many authentic 19th century Caucasian kilims, the panels were woven in two pieces and later joined by hand due to loom size limitations—an important hallmark of genuine tribal origin. The flatweave construction, achieved through the tapestry weave technique, makes it remarkable that this textile has survived in such excellent condition for over 125 years. Its vibrant vegetable-dyed colors and energetic patterning lend it a dynamic modern feel, allowing it to harmonize effortlessly with contemporary, bohemian, and classic interiors alike.
