Born in Hungary in 1916, Paul Penczner studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest before serving as a Hungarian Army officer during World War II. Wounded in combat, he was taken into Allied custody following the war and spent several years in Germany awaiting permission to immigrate to the United States. During this period, he supported himself by painting commissioned portraits of Allied military officers and their families.

While in an Allied displaced persons camp near Heilbronn, Germany, Penczner met U.S. Army soldier E. E. Loftin Jr., who recognized his artistic talent and provided him with painting materials. Loftin and his family later helped sponsor Penczner’s immigration to the United States. In 1951, Penczner and his wife settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where he became one of the city’s most respected portrait painters.

Signed and dated 1948, this portrait belongs to Penczner’s rare postwar European period before his immigration to America. The sitter is an unidentified U.S. Army officer depicted in formal uniform with Infantry insignia and multiple military decorations. The subject closely corresponds with Penczner’s documented commissions for Allied military personnel during these years.

The portrait is rendered with exceptional attention to expression, uniform detail, and light. It is presented in its original period gilt frame, which shows age-appropriate wear, including minor finish loss and corner wear consistent with age.
