Formal Visual Description
This artwork is an original oil painting by the renowned early California Impressionist Hanson Duvall Puthuff (1875–1972). The painting captures a dramatic, windswept vista along the rugged Pacific coastline, a quintessential subject of the plein-air style. The composition is anchored on the right by a magnificent, ancient Monterey Cypress tree. Executed with expressive, gestural brushstrokes, the tree’s gnarled trunk and sprawling canopy of deep forest green and rich auburn tones convey decades of enduring the coastal winds.
To the left, the untamed Pacific Ocean crashes against dark, jagged rock formations that jut out into the white surf. Puthuff utilizes a sophisticated palette dominated by soft lavenders, muted creams, and brilliant turquoise to capture the churning water and the heavy, moisture-laden atmosphere typical of a misty California coast. The foreground consists of a golden-brown bluff rendered in broad, confident impasto strokes that give the landscape a tactile weight and immediate presence. The entire composition is harmoniously presented in a classic, multi-tiered gilded gallery frame that elevates the warm tones embedded within the landscape.
Artist Biography: Hanson Duvall Puthuff (1875–1972)
Hanson Duvall Puthuff was one of the foundational figures of the Southern California plein-air painting movement. Born in Waverly, Missouri, in 1875, his artistic journey began at the University of Denver Fine Art School, followed by specialized commercial art training at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1903, Puthuff relocated to Los Angeles, initially making his living as a highly successful billboard painter. However, his true passion lay in capturing the raw, sun-drenched topography of his adopted home. Driven to paint directly from nature (en plein air), he became celebrated for his majestic interpretations of California's rolling foothills, desert expanses, and dramatic coastlines. He possessed a unique ability to render the brilliant, shifting quality of Mediterranean light and atmospheric haze characteristic of the region.
Puthuff was a vital pillar of the early Western art community:
Artistic Leadership: He co-founded the California Art Club in 1909 and helped establish the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918, profoundly shaping the infrastructure of fine arts in Southern California.
Distinguished Honors: Over his long career, Puthuff exhibited widely and received numerous critical accolades, including a prestigious Bronze Medal at the Paris Salon (1914) and Silver Medals at the Panama-California Exposition in San Diego (1915).
Institutional Legacy: Today, his works are highly coveted by collectors and are held in major public institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Laguna Art Museum, and the Bowers Museum. Puthuff remained dedicated to his craft until his passing in Corona del Mar, California, in 1972.
