At the end of the 18th Century he produced over 200 plates and after his death, his widow Jane issued further impressions. In 1789 the plates passed to publisher John Boydell and later to another firm in 1818. Printing continued into the 19th Century with the engraver Thomas Cook. This print was engraved by T.Cook. It is dated 1st February 1803 and and described "Designed and scratched in the true Dutch taste by W.Hogarth". The title is "Paul before felix " and it is a biblical scene but rendered with an ironic tone in Hogarth manner. The walnut frame is a contemporary production. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, engraver and printmaker, best known for satyrical works that critiqued 18th-Century English society. His career was unconventional and his prints combined storytelling, social commentary and formal innovation. Hogarth was born in London to Richard Hogarth, a schoolmaster and publisher and his wife, Anne. In 1714 he began training silversmith, engraving ornaments on metal, then shifted to independent copperplate engraving for book illustrations, trade cards and single prints. In 1720 he enrolled at the John Vanderbank Art Academy and later studied painting with James Thornhill, marrying Thornhill's daughter Jane in 1729. By the MId-1720 he had modest success with theater decorations but his lasting fame came from narrative print series published as affordable engravings.
