Large glazed stoneware vase signed "Haut 49" – Studio piece, circa 1950
This large cylindrical stoneware vase, thrown on the wheel, features a slender silhouette with a free and irregular opening, characteristic of studio ceramics from the 1950s.
The decoration alternates between reserves of glossy honey glaze and large raised areas covered with a deep green glaze punctuated with metallic drops, as well as a prominent vertical panel in black and cobalt blue treated in a highly graphic style. The overall effect is a composition that is both organic and abstract, typical of post-war artistic explorations.
The piece is made of high-quality chamotte stoneware, the firing of which highlights the natural nuances of the clay. Its considerable height and sculptural decoration make it a highly decorative piece, suitable for display as a standalone ceramic sculpture.
The vase bears a handwritten inscription under the glaze: "Haut 49," likely a signature or workshop mark accompanied by the date 1949, though its attribution remains uncertain.
Condition: Very good overall condition. No restoration or cracks. Some minor wear consistent with age and small superficial chips on the rim.
