These decorative natural history plates combine scientific illustration with Victorian-era artistry, depicting a remarkable variety of European moths, butterflies, caterpillars, and their host plants in carefully balanced compositions. The first plate features striking day-flying moths including the Unfortunate Aglaope (Aglaope infausta), Globularia Spinster (Ino globulariae), and Sea-Lavender Spinster (Ino statices), shown among clover, wildflowers, and other native plants. Brilliant crimson, black, and deep blue tones create a dramatic contrast against the soft botanical setting. The second plate presents an elegant collection of geometrid moths and butterflies accompanied by flowering plants and berries. Delicate hand coloring emphasizes the subtle beauty of these species while illustrating their natural habitats and life cycles. The third plate focuses on various noctuid and related moths together with caterpillars, chrysalides, and food plants. The composition highlights different stages of development, reflecting the nineteenth century's growing interest in entomology and the scientific study of nature. Produced by Art. Anst. v. Hochdanz in Stuttgart, these lithographs exemplify the high standards of German chromolithographic printing during the late nineteenth century. The illustrations were intended both as educational references and as visually engaging works of art, making them highly sought after today by collectors of natural history, botanical illustration, and antique scientific prints. Displayed together, the three plates create an impressive decorative ensemble, ideal for a study, library, country house, conservatory, garden room, or contemporary interior seeking a connection to the natural world. This is an original 1883 lithographic print set, not a reproduction. The prints are sold unframed. Any framed images are shown for display inspiration only. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and occasional light spotting as visible. Colors remain attractive and well preserved. Please study the images carefully. Plate marks are not applicable, as these are lithographs. Framing tips: These three plates display beautifully as a matching gallery set. We recommend dark walnut, ebonized, or antique gilt frames with warm ivory museum mats. Hanging the prints side by side with equal spacing creates an elegant natural history presentation.
