This darkly lacquered bookcase once stood in the center of a traditional Chinese scholars' studio, displaying a collection of books, scrolls, viewing stones and treasured objects. Crafted in the late 19th century with traditional joinery, the elegant case has three open shelves, each enclosed with fretwork borders of plum blossoms and meandering scrollwork. Subtle details set the bookcase apart, such as the concave lines of the carved fretwork and the beaded edge that traces the frame.
