This hand-carved devotional sculpture exhibits the raw character and soulful appeal typical of European Baroque or folk art traditions. The figure is depicted kneeling on a faceted hexagonal base, draped in a rich, deeply folded blue mantle over a golden-ochre tunic. His face is finely rendered with a carved mustache, a full beard, and downward-cast eyes that convey a powerful sense of quiet reverence or mourning.
Hand-carved solid wood with layers of traditional gesso, polychrome paint, and natural aged patina.
The figure features a prominent structural loss to the left forearm (as shown in photos), where a peg hole indicates a separate piece or symbolic attribute was once attached. A vertical split is present along the chest/torso block, characteristic of aged wood expanding over time.
