The artist worked with a palette knife in true impasto, thick ridges and drips of paint build up the sail and water.

The foreground boat carries an oversized lateen-style sail in cranberry and burgundy with a soft pink highlight and streaks of orange and forest green; its hull is striped red, green, and white, with fenders hung over the side. A second, smaller boat sits behind it under mustard-yellow and tangerine sails. The sea is built up in teal and turquoise with thick white impasto for the foam, under a pale cream-and-blue impasto sky. Signed "Michel," lower right, in the water beneath the large sail.

Medium: oil, palette-knife impasto, on a fiberboard/masonite panel (visible in the fibrous, speckled texture where the paint is thin).

Carved giltwood, laurel-leaf-and-berry motif over a red bole ground (visible where the gilt has worn), double-cushion profile with a wide carved outer molding and a narrower carved liner.
