This fine two-piece Chest is an Antique Japanese Isho Tansu (clothing/kimono chest), traditionally dating from the late Meiji era (1868–1912) to the Taisho era (1912–1926).
This chest is a two-section stacking chest designed with side carrying handles (Tobite) to allow easy transport in two independent parts.
The front presentation is excellent. The drawers align well, and all major decorative iron corner braces (sumi-kanagu) and lock plates are present.
The exterior features a translucent reddish-brown lacquer finish (urushi) typical of regional chests from areas like Sendai or Nihonmatsu.
The top section features one large drawer and a split configuration providing space for the right side small hinged door that opens to reveal two hidden smaller keepsake drawers.
The drawer wells and framing are exceptionally clean, bright, and free of heavy staining or major structural warping.
The bottom section has two large drawers.
The hardware features heavy, hand-forged iron plates and warabite (bracket style) drawer pulls. The central lock plates are beautifully incised with traditional Sho Chiku Bai (Three Friends of Winter) stylized motifs—specifically highlighting a plum blossom (ume), pine needle sprays (matsu), and bamboo leaves (take), as well as a butterfly decorative accent.
The iron mounts retain a wonderful, dark oxidized patina without significant active rust flaking.
The top surface and back panels show standard surface wear, minor scratching. There are cracks from dehydration contraction on the back of both pieces. One of the carrying handles on the side of the upper section is loose.
The wear and tear are consistent with the age of this two piece stacking chest.
