This beautiful piece is a classic antique Chinese 5-tier stacking wedding box (often called a dowry or tiffin box), beautifully adorned with meaningful imperial symbols. Lacquered dowry boxes like this were treasured family keepsakes.
• Shou (壽) Characters: The stylized orange symbols painted on the lid and side panels are the Chinese character Shou, representing longevity, long life, and enduring health. Incorporating this onto a wedding item acts as a blessing for the couple to grow old together.
• The Phoenix (Fenghuang): Visible in the central medallion of the lid, the hand-painted bird represents the Phoenix, a symbol of high virtue, grace, and the feminine (Yin) energy. When used for weddings, it represents the bride, bringing blessings of a prosperous and harmonious marriage.
• Geometric Borders: The edges are detailed with a traditional Chinese key fret or meander border (leiwen), which represents eternal good fortune and continuous wealth.
• Structure: The multi-tiered stacking design allowed families to transport ceremonial wedding food, sweetmeats, or gifts during the bridal procession.
