An exceptional example of Victorian travel craftsmanship, this handsome leather travel box dates to 1883 and reflects the refined elegance and practicality of a well-appointed gentleman's journey. Constructed from sturdy brown leather, the exterior features a beautifully impressed alligator-style textured pattern that has developed a rich, warm patina through more than a century of age. The original adjustable buckle strap closure remains intact, adding authentic period character, while its visible wear speaks to the box's genuine history and use. A handwritten inscription on the attached leather tab, "J.E. Cochran 1883," provides a wonderful touch of provenance and a direct connection to its original owner.
The box measures 8 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 2 inches deep. Opening the case reveals a finely appointed black leather-lined interior that is as thoughtfully designed as it is attractive.
