Lovely brass table lamp base in the shape of a Corinthian column, sitting on a stepped, fluted square plinth and topped with a nicely cast acanthus leaf capital just below the fitting. The column itself is unusual, as it has a repoussé finish, hammered out from the inside to give it a dimpled, tactile texture. Repoussé was a common Victorian and Edwardian method for adding intricate, three-dimensional patterns to lamp bases and columns. Because it is a labor-intensive manual art, it is often a sign of high-quality craftsmanship. It has a lovely patina that only comes with age. It's a good solid piece with some proper weight to it. It's been professionally rewired with an antique brown twist flex and new antique brass bayonet fitting.
