The Abbeville Press edition (1985) of the Red-Shouldered Hawk (Plate 56) facsimile is a world-class reproduction of John James Audubon’s masterpiece, matching the exact Double Elephant Folio scale of the 1830s original artwork.
Taken from The Birds of America book by John James Audubon. The massive dimensions of 39.5x26.5 allow the Red-Shouldered Hawk to be viewed at its actual, true-to-life size.
The "Aerial Battle" because the hawk is a powerful raptor, Audubon depicted it alongside its mate in a dramatic, soaring posture intertwined with a fierce Northern Flicker prey struggle so its entire dynamic body and the complex narrative could fit onto the paper without shrinking the scale.
1985 Abbeville Quality: This specific edition is highly prized by collectors. It was printed via high-fidelity color lithography on heavy, archival, acid-free paper, perfectly capturing the rich rufous chest barring, checkered wing patterns, and fine line work of the original hand-colored aquatint engraving.
Description: An unframed facsimile of plate number 56.
