Charming and unusual pair of vintage French cast stone monkey statues, sourced from a garden outside Paris and purchased from Los Angeles dealer JF Chen on Melrose Avenue in 1988. Each figure depicts a seated monkey protectively sheltering its young, with expressive faces, elongated limbs, and beautifully modeled hands and tails that give them a strong sculptural presence.
Originally made for outdoor use, the figures show decades of authentic garden weathering, with a soft, timeworn surface and scattered losses that add tremendous character. They make a striking statement flanking an entry, anchoring a console, or adding sculptural interest to a terrace, conservatory, or courtyard.
