Las Meninas #1 is a unique ceramic sculpture that reflects Diane Grant's ongoing investigation into the intersections of art history, architecture, and contemporary form. Taking its title from Diego Velázquez's celebrated masterpiece Las Meninas, the work is not a literal interpretation but rather an exploration of the painting's enduring themes of complexity, spatial ambiguity, and layered perception.
Constructed through an additive hand-building process, the vase emerges as an architectural assemblage of planes, protrusions, and sculpted reliefs. Its vertical composition recalls fragments of ancient monuments, archaeological artifacts, and modernist structures, while simultaneously retaining the intimate scale and presence of a domestic object. The result is a work that oscillates between vessel and sculpture, function and contemplation.
The matte white surface accentuates the object's rich topography, allowing light to articulate its intricate forms and cast shifting shadows across the composition. Through its restrained palette, attention is directed toward the physicality of the material and the rhythm of its sculptural construction. The work embodies Grant's interest in the transformative potential of clay, where accumulation, erosion, and texture become vehicles for visual expression.
Influenced by the ceramic innovations of Peter Voulkos and Stan Bitters, as well as the formal language of twentieth-century abstraction, Grant approaches ceramics as a medium capable of bridging architecture, sculpture, and design. In Las Meninas #1, historical memory and contemporary sensibility converge to create an object that is at once monumental and intimate, ancient and modern.
Both a functional vessel and a sculptural statement, the work invites viewers to engage with it from multiple perspectives, revealing an ever-changing dialogue between mass, void, surface, and form.
