A striking American Federal mirror featuring a beautifully detailed reverse-painted glass tablet centered with a classical urn and drapery motif above a plinth inscribed “Washington”—a patriotic nod characteristic of the early Republic period.
The frame is richly ornamented with carved and giltwood elements, including an acorn-and-cap frieze along the cornice, a beaded band, and fluted columnar sides terminating in block feet. The acorn motif—symbolic of strength and endurance—adds a refined architectural rhythm across the top rail, while the warm, original gilding has mellowed to a beautifully aged patina with areas of wear that speak to its history.
The églomisé panel retains its original charm, with delicate hand-painted details and soft oxidation that enhance its authenticity and visual depth. The mirror plate appears to be later, providing a clean reflective surface while preserving the integrity of the period frame and tablet.
Likely originating from the northeastern United States, possibly New England or New York, this piece embodies the neoclassical ideals of the Federal era—symmetry, symbolism, and restrained elegance—while incorporating distinctly American iconography.
A sophisticated and character-rich piece, equally at home anchoring a hallway, powder room, or layered above a chest.
