An openwork metal stem gives the lamp its slender architectural poise, with the glass shade completing the form in a softer line.
What is now called French Art Deco came into focus at the 1925 Paris Exposition, where modern decorative and industrial arts were presented as a language for contemporary interiors. In French work of the 1920s, modernity often appeared through a disciplined reworking of inherited craft: clearer line, refined surface, geometric order and objects conceived for complete interiors. Lighting was especially suited to this language, because metal, glass and electric light could be composed into a single decorative object. Here, the open metal support gives the lamp its vertical rhythm, while the glass element softens the outline and brings light into the structure itself. The piece carries that approach on a modest scale, making electric light part of the decorative form rather than a separate function.
