Handwoven in wool circa 1950–1960, this 5x6 vintage Kilim, woven in the tradition of a Frazada textile, is a striking example of mid-century flatweave artistry. A distinctive addition to Rug & Kilim’s curation, the piece reflects a compelling interplay of bold geometry and rich, saturated color, imbued with the character and authenticity of utilitarian weaving traditions.
On the Design:
This piece enjoys a dynamic geometric composition defined by a large-scale lattice of interconnected diamond motifs. Rendered in deep charcoal against a vivid pink ground, the pattern creates a dramatic sense of contrast and structure, both graphic and expressive in its execution.
The diamonds, framed by serrated and stepped outlines, carry a tribal sensibility, evoking symbolic motifs often associated with protection, continuity, and the natural world. Smaller geometric accents within and around the lattice enrich the field with subtle complexity, while preserving a strong sense of symmetry.
A central seam, visible as a slightly raised vertical join, reveals the traditional method of weaving two narrow panels and joining them to create a larger textile. This detail serves not only as a structural element but also as a testament to the piece’s handmade origin and cultural authenticity.
The borders introduce a complementary rhythm of smaller geometric forms, softly framing the field without detracting from its bold presence. Abrash is present throughout, lending depth and movement to the saturated pink tones, while the interplay of wool texture enhances the tactile richness of the weave.
At once expressive and grounded, this composition balances tribal geometry with a modern sensibility, making it particularly well-suited as a wall hanging or statement textile.
