the spherical body is pierced with large reticulated panels centred by chrysanthemum motifs, complemented by a fully openwork domed cover. A fitted inner liner confirms its original incense function.

the stem, encircled by a sculpted white dragon in high relief, rises from a square base painted in underglaze blue. The modelling remains sharp and energetic, while the blue decoration of clouds and flowing motifs adds visual rhythm. A refined, intellectually balanced composition. Founded in the mid-17th century, the hirado kilns developed within a near court-exclusive tradition, shaping a disciplined aesthetic and technical excellence that continues to define their highest works.

condition:

excellent condition. No visible damage or restoration. The reticulation is intact throughout. The dragon retains its finest details in full preservation.

the visible joint between the upper body and the stem is not damage but a normal manufacturing feature, as these elements were made separately and joined before firing. Similar joints can be seen on comparable examples.

small superficial firing marks on the ribbed section of the stem are not cracks. Under uv light they do not extend into the porcelain and are consistent with minor kiln effects from the firing process. See less
