This expressive work is an early gouache esquisse by Georges Rouault, one of the most important French modernists of the 20th century. Titled Face à Face, the composition presents two confronting figures rendered in Rouault’s unmistakable visual language—bold, almost carved forms, heavy contours, and a restrained, somber palette.

Created circa 1930, this intimate sketch reflects Rouault’s deep interest in human psychology and moral tension.
