Panel / Pyrography: Arab Horseriders Hunting with Falcons and Greyhounds, France Circa 1900
This beautiful example of pyrography, enhanced with paint and tints, depicts a horseback hunting scene set in a Middle Eastern desert landscape.
Two horseriders are present, with the foreground figure rendered in great detail. He is accompanied by two greyhounds and two birds of prey. His attire and the surrounding environment are typical of a classical scene, which was very fashionable in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The varied treatment of the animals' fur, the cast shadows of the figures, and even the lightly sketched dust cloud under the horse’s hoof all attest to the sophistication of the execution.
The work is discreetly signed “J. Charpy” in the lower right corner.
France, Circa 1900
