This vintage Zulu, African art, elongated shield measures 45”H X 11”W X1.5”D and has an attached wooden handle on the back, which assists in a wall mount.
These shields were used in battle for hundreds of years and came about during the King Shaka Zulu reign. Today, these shields are used in traditional Zulu ceremonies (weddings) and story telling.
Each shield bears its own pattern with many brownish-black and creamy-off white colored striations carved into it; these “ribs” run horizontally and vertically across the face of the art work.
