The first torchiere presents Venus in an intimate moment of vanity and contemplation, recalling the celebrated theme of Titian’s Venus with a Mirror. Venus is portrayed partially draped as she delicately arranges her hair, while Cupid playfully holds a mirror before her. The composition is graceful and theatrical, with the sculptor capturing the softness of the figures, movement of the drapery, and playful interaction between mother and child.

Its companion portrays a contrasting interpretation of Venus. Here, the goddess appears nude, modestly shielding herself while a delicately carved vine of leaves winds across her figure. At her side, Cupid looks upward and appears to climb toward her, introducing a charming sense of movement and affection. Venus’s modest gesture recalls the classical Venus Pudica tradition famously associated with Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, creating a compelling counterpart to the more self-assured figure of the first lamp.

Above each sculptural group rises an elaborately carved alabaster torchiere or urn-form light, transforming the figures into impressive architectural lighting elements. The natural translucency and subtle veining of the alabaster give the lamps a particularly beautiful presence when illuminated while emphasizing the depth and detail of the carving.

Each torchiere is displayed upon a substantial black marble column-form pedestal, whose restrained neoclassical design provides a dramatic contrast to the luminous white alabaster. Together, the lamps and pedestals create a monumental presentation, standing approximately seven feet tall overall.

Designed as a complementary pair rather than identical compositions, these torchieres would make a commanding statement flanking an entrance, grand staircase, fireplace, console, or doorway.
