A modernist piece which has borrowed its classical shape from antiquity. Like an ancient amphora without handles, the vase has a calming presence with its graceful cylindrical body tapering off at the neck and reversing itself to form a broad mouth which in turn, narrows to an opening, perhaps for a single flower. The hues used by the ceramicist range from sandy to a darker brown with a band of enamel in olive green approaching the base. Visually stunning and textural at the same time. The piece is in good overall condition. It is signed on the underside. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video will be provided. About the Artist : Carlo Zauli (1926-2002), s culptor and ceramist, was one of the most outstanding artists of the second half of the 20th century in Italy. from the 1950s until the end of the century, he helped revive Italian ceramics, bringing it into the limelight internationally and freeing it from its purely useful or decorative functions. He was a three-time winner of the famous Faenza Prize (1953, 1958 and 1962). He created an imagery in which rock figuration, geometric abstraction and other informal suggestions were reconciled. These ceramic creations earned the artist prestigious awards and numerous commissions from abroad. They gradually gave way to intense technical experimentation in the second half of the decade, leading to the almost exclusive use of sandstone. The raw colours and twisted shapes of the first period were followed by a rigorous search aimed at the essential. These were Scandinavian-influenced creations characterised by a rare elegance.
