Antique oil on canvas of a Russian or Polish nobleman, painted by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1637.
There is much controversy about this painting, currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and has previously been owned by such luminaries as Catherine the Great and Andrew Mellon. It has been referred to as both a Polish and Russian nobleman, the sitter wears a Russian sable hat and is wearing a large pearl earring and gold chain of office across his fur coat and is holding an ornate gold topped cane. Many have speculated who the sitter is, including possibly Rembrandt himself in his inimitable mischievous manner, but scholars generally believe it is of a Polish nobleman.
It was common for artists who were being classically trained to replicate famous works by the Old Masters that proceeded them, this is a very good, mid to late 1700s such rendition of Rembrandt's enigmatic portrait.
Condition is very good, this interesting portrait is ready to hang on you wall.
