This carved boarded oak box originated in late 17th Century England. It would have likely been called either a "desk box". In the 19th Century, the Victorians called most small, old, oak boxes, "bible boxes" as many of them were used to hold the family bible, and other important documents. The original wire hinges are long gone, though evidence of their existence remains. The current metal hinges likely date from the 19th Century. The metal escutcheon plate on the front is later and has some losses. The piece, typical of its age, has various cracks, losses, chips, and other imperfections, but it is stable and sturdy and the wood looks to be all original to the item. less
