Hand-knotted in wool circa 1890-1900, this 8x9 antique Chinese rug is an exceptionally rare curation from the Rug & Kilim Collection.
R&K Principal Josh Nazmiyal believes this piece may originate from the region between China and India, and possibly further back than this estimated date.
On the Design:
This particular design enjoys regal medallion patterns with pictorial dragon motifs—one of the most storied mythical creatures in Oriental rugs. Its colorway favors a light gold and beige-brown with fine black and sky blue detailing in its many floral motifs, ruyi clouds and similar symbols. Connoisseurs may note elements of Mongolian design in its symbols, and the Art Deco sensibility historians know from this provenance. Keen eyes will further note the interlocking fret motifs in the field background—the same as those in the most prominent border, but in a diagonal orientation, with more subdued neutral tones.
This rug’s play of both the most traditional and unusual elements in a rug of its era is like few of its kind—an extremely collectible piece with an elegant presence.
Condition:
This antique rug enjoys good condition for its age and origin—a finely woven piece with minimal wear.
