This brown patina bronze sculpture, entitled "Vainqueur au Combat de Coq", is signed Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900) on the terrace and depicts a nude, athletic man standing on one leg with the other bent and extended behind him. His left arm holds a rooster close to his body, while his right arm is raised triumphantly above his head. The sculpture rests on a circular base with intricate foliate detailing, bearing the hallmark "Thiebaut Frères Fondeurs Paris".
This work captures a moment of victory and strength, as suggested by the dynamic pose and celebration with a rooster, a historical symbol of fighting spirit and bravery, and is relevant for its artistic representation of human anatomy and emotion through body language in sculptural form.
Alexandre Falguière (1831-1900), known for winning numerous awards during his career, is particularly renowned for this work. Presented in 1864 at the Salon des Artistes in Paris, Le Vainqueur au Combat de Coqs brought the artist immediate success. Purchased by Napoleon III himself, the original sculpture is now on display at the Musée d'Orsay.
