the painting by giovanni battista spinelli (1613 - 1647), an italian painter, depicts jacob's dream. Giovanni battista spinelli was active in the mid-17th century mainly in naples. His works are in private collections and some are in the uffizi and the national gallery in london. This painting can be dated to around 1655, although spinelli's canvases are difficult to date since their quality is uneven. The painting depicts jacob in a deep sleep while surrounded by dark, ominous clouds, but in his dream a staircase of light appears, where angels ascend and descend.
