The Italian sculptor, painter, printmaker, jewelry designer and set designer Domenico Serio Calabrone (Aieta, Italy 1928 - São Paulo 2000) moved to São Paulo in 1954 where two years later he held his first solo exhibition at an art gallery store. From the 1960s, Calabrone's sculptures sought to artistically represent organic and mechanical forms fused together as half-human, half-machine figures, thus striving for a sense of movement reminiscent of, albeit more subdued than that produced by the Italian Futurist sculptor Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) in works like Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1913).
As an example, we present this robust bronze sculpture depicting a humanoid, biomechanical figure, wrapped in circuitry-covered garb resembling astronauts spacesuits. Noteworthy is the polished bronze helmet, the only smoothed part amidst the otherwise textured work. Signed by Calabrone, it stands on a base formed by an unrefined sheet of the same material.
